There are also glass like shards called spicules found in their body making them unpalatable. Predators do not eat them because they lack nutrition. Sponges are invertebrates - that means they do not have a backbone. Sponges come in many different types of colors, shapes and sizes, and estimates say there are more than 5,000 species of sponges.
